UFC 116 targeted for July 3 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, could mark Lesnar’s return

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will stay home for its Fourth of July weekend event, and the show now has a likely venue: the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

MMAjunkie.com first reported earlier this month that UFC officials plan to host a July 3 show, likely to be UFC 116, in Las Vegas and that UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar could make his return at the event.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has since received a request from the UFC for the July 3 event date and venue.

Super Bowl Champ Neal — Who Once Beat Brock Lesnar — Interested in MMA

Stephen Neal is a former NCAA wrestling champion and NFL Super Bowl winner, but he’s apparently thinking of adding one more sport to his resume: mixed martial arts.

Neal, a longtime offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, is a free agent. And according to CSN New England, his agent Neil Cornrich says Neal is considering a variety of possibilities for his future, including fighting.

“He’s excited to continue in the NFL and perhaps after that take a chance at the UFC,” Cornrich said. “Getting back involved in Olympic-style wrestling is definitely a consideration.”

Acer Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, hosts today’s “UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez” official fighter weigh-ins, and we’ll provide a live video stream of the proceedings at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT).

UFC 110, which marks the UFC’s debut in Australia, takes place Saturday with a main event of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez and a co-headliner of Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva.

With just 48 hours remaining until the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Australian debut, the promotion this evening announced a couple major changes to the fight card.

Anthony Perosh replaces ill Ben Rothwell in a UFC 110 main-card fight with Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, and a shoulder injury suffered by Elvin Sinosic has forced the cancellation of his preliminary-card bout with fellow Australian Chris Haseman.

UFC 110 takes place Saturday at Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Aussie George Sotiropolous doesn’t expect home-field advantage at UFC 110

Maybe it’s because he’s spent little time in Australia since his quest for MMA greatness began, but UFC lightweight George Sotiropoulos said his roots matter little when he steps into the cage against Joe “Daddy” Stevenson at this weekend’s UFC 110 event in Sydney.

Instead Sotiropoulos said it’s about the performance he puts on, not the flag he flies.

“It’s pleasing to me to fight in my home country and to perform at a venue like the Acer Arena, but that won’t automatically make me beat Joe Stevenson on Feb. 21,” Sotiropoulos said. “Once I walk into the cage, it’s all irrelevant.”

Heath Herring is not trying to start a crusade; he’s just looking out for No. 1.

In a Wednesday interview with MMAjunkie.com, the UFC heavyweight addressed several controversial statements he made four days prior during a segment on an Orlando ESPN radio affiliate.

In the interview, Herring bluntly said that the UFC plays favorites and does not make it worth his while to make fighting a priority.
